Abstract:

In this presentation we address two central problems in Flow Control, namely:

(i) determination of optimal open-loop controls, and
(ii) determination of closed-loop feedback control strategies.

We discuss briefly how these problems can be solved using general methods of the Optimal Control Theory and focus on some recent results concerning computational methods required for solution of such problems in practice. As regards the first problems, we will survey preconditioning strategies in adjoint-based optimization, whereas as concerns the second problem, we will discuss derivation of control-oriented reduced-order models for a class of wake flows. During the lecture elements of rigorous mathematical analysis will be presented along with results of large-scale numerical computations..
